Exciting times are ahead for Worsbrough and New Lodge!

Worsbrough is to benefit from major investment over the next few years. A range of projects will be   delivered to transform the area so that it is one that people feel is safe and secure, with a pleasant     environment, and where there is a good range of quality homes to choose from. The project isn’t going to be just be about improving the houses but also about working alongside the community tackling social problems and helping to build a vibrant community.

Berneslai Homes, Barnsley Council and South Yorkshire Housing Association are working in   partnership with the local community to develop and deliver these projects.  A Master plan has been produced to help us attract the new investment over and above decent homes funding. Mel Asquith has been appointed as Project Manager, specific for Worsbrough and is working closely with the community, key stakeholders and local members to develop and implement projects from the Master Plan.

Seventy nine properties have been approved for demolition in the Worsbrough Common area.  A bid has been submitted to the Housing Co-operation to fund a number of high quality  replacement homes, as the first phase of the Worsbrough Common Regeneration project.   Other properties in the area will benefit from Decent Homes work over the next few years.

If you would like any further information please contact Mel Asquith or Nick Petty on (01226) 772707.

The Worsbrough Oscars was held on Thursday 6th September at
Shaw Lane Rugby Club, the event was jointly organised by the
Worsbrough Pioneer Project and the Worsbrough SYFAB project.  The
event was held in recognition of the dedication and perseverance of
volunteers in the Worsbrough areas.  There were also contributions from
SYFAB and Penny Stanley from  Voluntary
Action Barnsley who spoke
about what will be available to community groups and  members once
the project workers finish in December 2007.

Volunteers who received awards had been nominated by local people who thought they deserved acknowledgment for their voluntary work. 22 awards were presented to local  volunteers by His  Worshipful the Mayor Len Picken with congratulations for their individual effort and dedication to the area.

Regeneration is being achieved in different ways; examples of which are by coaching young people in sports activities, improving park areas to enable the whole community to re-use and    enjoy them once again, working towards the construction of new community buildings, providing and holding  activities and trips throughout the school holidays for young people.  Also not  forgetting the new play and  activity equipment that has been installed at Worsbrough Common and Dale Park and this is just a snippet of the achievements, there are many more!  This has all been made possible by the volunteers desire to make Worsbrough a better place.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening which was followed by a pea and pie supper!

The Pre-Loved Shop on Highstone Road has had a re-vamp recently and there are three new volunteers.  The hours of the shop have been changed to meet the demand and are now: 9 am to  2 pm,  Monday to Friday.

Vera Mawby the Chair of the Worsbrough Common Community Association would like to take this opportunity to thank the new volunteers for their hard work and efforts made and welcome them ‘on board’.

The new play equipment is now installed on the ‘top rec’  alongside the multi use games area in Worsbrough Common.  WCCA have worked extremely hard to get funding for the new equipment.  An ‘open day’ took place on the 26th March when some local  Worsbrough Common school children attended on the day to help with the launch.

This new equipment was funded by  Waste Recycling Environmental (WREN), Big Lottery Fund Reaching Communities, Green Spaces and Area Forum.

The Worsbrough Neighbourhood Wardens  scheme is a new team of   Neighbourhood  Wardens, that consists of a Neighbourhood Warden Manager and four wardens.

The wardens are for Worsbrough Common and two wardens are for the rest of the Worsbrough area. The aims of the team are to engage with local  residents in their  community, solving local problems together and to provide a high visible  presence with targeted patrols in vulnerable areas.

Working  within the Safer  Neighbourhood team, dealing with crime and the fear of crime,  challenging anti–social behaviour, youth nuisance and environmental issues i.e. Fly-tipping, dog fouling, litter, graffiti, abandoned vehicles and discarded needles.  To visit and reassure vulnerable residents, to build a vulnerable resident data base.  To attend local meetings i.e. Neighbourhood Watch, TARA, area forum and steering groups, meet local elected members.  It is hoped that by attending these     meetings and visiting    residents that we will be able to find local hot spots and vulnerable areas.  To carry out local surveys to ask residents what they want in their community, rather than what we think they need.

To achieve our aims we will be looking to you to assist the team by  adopting your own community. We need your assistance in making your community a cleaner, safer community to live.

When you see a Neighbourhood Warden in your area, please feel free to stop and talk to them, they are your Neighbourhood Wardens serving you in your community.

The  Neighbourhood Wardens are to introduce a team of Junior Wardens and will be looking for local children to join.  They will be looking to raise funds to provide uniforms and  equipment.

The Junior Wardens will perform community   clean-ups, environmental surveys dealing with fly-tipping, littering, street lighting and graffiti.

The Junior Wardens will also take part in attending local galas and fun days, and as a reward for their services we will arrange educational trips to other services  i.e. South Yorkshire Police   Stations, South Yorkshire Police Mounted Section Ring Farm and Barnsley Fire service.

Friends Wanted!

Home-start are always looking to expand our team of home-visiting volunteers and you may be just what we are looking for. Experience of raising a family and a couple of spare hours a week (I know, they are rare!) are the only requirements. In return we will provide a preparation course with a qualification at the end of it, out of pocket expenses and full support and training. Our existing volunteers find it very rewarding and feel that they are helping to make a difference to another family.

Fun for the Kids!

If you have children under five years of age then why not bring them to the Worsbrough Common Kids drop-in? It runs on a Thursday afternoon between 1 and 3pm at the ICT Resource Centre on Warren Quarry Lane and is free to everyone. There are toys and activities for the kids and a cuppa and some adult company for you. The group started out at Community House on Highstone Road but quickly grew in size and had to relocate to bigger premises. A similar group, Worsbrough Tots, runs on a Wednesday morning between 10am and 12 noon at St Thomas’ Church Hall on Bank End Road (next to The Cutting Edge pub). Again, it is open to everyone and free of charge so come along and join in the fun!

If you want to find out more about becoming a Home-Start volunteer or about the drop-ins then give Angela a call on 01226 245985 and she’ll be more than happy to have a chat with you or send you further information.
