Worsbrough Common Cabin Crew Summer Garden Project 2007
As part of the
Positive Activities For Young People Summer Project a group of young
people aged 9 to 14 decided to improve the garden at the back of
Worsbrough Common Community House on Highstone Road. The group wanted to
improve the garden for everyone in Worsbrough Common who used the cabin
and community house. With funding from Berneslai homes the group set
about planning the new garden and how they would do it. The young people
designed the garden with the help of youth workers and thought carefully
about what they wanted in the garden. The group felt that the garden was
plain and could be made into a friendlier place to chill out and play.
Over six days during the summer holidays the group created a new patio
area complete with a canopy, they made a vegetable patch and they also
designed, painted and planted their own plant pots. The group learned
lots of new skills related to gardening which included digging,
levelling, trimming, laying flags, selecting the right plants and
building a table and the canopy. The group worked well as a team and
even when they were on a residential weekend to Scarborough the garden
was still in their minds as they collected shells and bought souvenirs
to put into the garden. Sarah Juhasz and Callum White said ‘We enjoyed
co-operating with each other, we had fun doing the garden as well as
planning it, we enjoyed every bit’.

The Cabin Crew meets on Mondays in the cabin at the back
of Community House:-
The Monday group which is the open provision for young people aged 13 to
19 yrs is currently in the middle of a YEP funded programme. As part of
this programme the young people have taken part in a samba band
workshop where they learned to play various steel drum instruments
and worked towards performing a piece of music. In doing this the young
people developed rhythm, timing, communication and teamwork skills.
The young people have also completed an arts project in which they used
digital images to produce a self portrait. The young people are also
working on a group painting which they wish to donate to the YEP as a
way of saying thanks for their support and contributions to the project.
In addition to these activities the group has just started a music
production workshop in which they are writing and producing their own
piece of music. The group will also be taking part in the PAYP Easter
holiday provision in which they will have access to motor cross riding
and will take part in a programme looking at self awareness and
self image. After Easter the group is hoping to begin a project which
involves planning an event for the younger members who attend the
Wednesday cabin group to come to. This event is expected to be a summer
BBQ including fun games and activities.
There is also a Wednesday group - further info. to follow

Since the last report we have covered the following subject’s during the
“teaching time” in our Kidz Klubs:
Stranger
danger/helping the stranger
Death and dying
Loneliness
Popularity
There has also been the usual mix of sports, games, dance, drama, music,
crafts and songs. Last week the children enjoyed presenting their
talents to the rest of the group and everyone was encouraging and
supportive to each other. The winners of the competition were two 11
year old girls who must have been rehearsing their dance routine for a
week. There was also an impressive high jumper and a drama presentation
by 6 of our girls.
All the children who attended the recent activity week-end at The Oakes
had a great time and as usual can’t wait to go again. They were involved
in the usual teaching sessions but also took part in outdoor pursuits.
E.g. climbing wall, archery, raft building, crafts, initiative games.
We have been swimming t the Metrodome and ice skating at the new complex
with two of our groups and have organised circus skills workshops for
the Christmas party. We have taken one group to Excape in Castleford, to
do Laserquest and all had a great day.
Our promotional DVD has been completed and has been well received at all
the groups we have shown it to. We are keen to come and do presentations
of our work to any groups who are interested and this can be arranged by
calling us on any of the above contact numbers.
We remain committed
to partnerships with all the communities in which we work and value the
support we get from the Worsbrough Common Community Association.
